Food and Drug Administration apparently approved a new antibiotic, cefquinome, to treat a pneumonia-like disease in cattle, despite warnings from health groups and a majority of the agency's own expert advisers that the decision was dangerous for people. Cefquinome is one of a powerful class of drugs that are highly effective, but, have led to the rise of microbes resistant to most antibiotics. The American Medical Association and a number of other groups, including the FDA's Advisory Board, have warned the FDA that it should not be used.
