FAU: Drop the ICE Partnership Now

FAU: Drop the ICE Partnership Now
The Issue
I never imagined I’d be the one starting something like this. I’m not an activist or a public speaker. I’m a student who believes this agreement is wrong.
FAU’s agreement with ICE under the 287(g) program creates fear, harms trust, and undermines our educational mission.
Florida Atlantic University is home to over 3,700 international students on F‑1 visas and 78 on J‑1 visas during the 2024–25 academic year. Many of whom come from vulnerable communities and rely on campus as a safe learning environment
I’m calling on our administration and trustees to do what’s right: cancel this agreement and protect all members of our community.
We express our strong opposition to the 287(g) agreement between our university police department and U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). We understand that Florida law does not require university police departments to enter into such agreements.
We, the undersigned students, faculty, alumni, and community members of FAU, call on our Board of Trustees, President, and university administration to address the harmful impacts of the existing 287(g) agreement between our university police and ICE by:
-
Initiating the process to terminate the 287(g) agreement immediately
- Until termination is complete, implementing strict limitations on the agreement’s scope
-
Establishing clear policies that protect all campus community members
- Creating transparency mechanisms for all immigration enforcement activities on campus
- Instituting oversight procedures to prevent civil rights violations. Our university should prioritize creating a safe learning environment for all students. The current agreement undermines campus safety, misuses resources, and contradicts our educational mission.
