"Testimony #11: A Hysterectomy Nightmare at UT Athens
Last year, I had a hysterectomy at UT Health Athens, and it was a disaster from the beginning. When I went in for my pre-op labs, they had lost all of my paperwork. I had to personally reach out to the doctor just to get things resent.
The morning of my surgery, registration handed me post-op care instructions—for an outpatient surgery. I was supposed to stay overnight. When I refused to sign, the staff insisted I was wrong and said I’d be going home. I stood my ground until they finally called my doctor, who confirmed I was inpatient.
After surgery, I was placed in a room where, honestly, nothing worked. I called it “the leftover parts room.” Turns out, because they marked me incorrectly, there were no real beds ready for me. I didn’t get dinner until almost midnight, and my catheter, which was supposed to be removed by 4 PM, wasn’t taken out until I finally got food—also around midnight.
The next morning, I told the doctor everything that happened. He ignored it. When I got home, I started having trouble peeing. It felt like my bladder was always full, but I could barely go. My PCP found blood in my urine, and the surgeon told me it was probably a UTI—without even waiting for lab results.
I kept texting his office, telling them something wasn’t right. They brushed me off. Fast forward over a year: I still have blood in my urine. I’m anemic again and back on medical leave. I’ve had to get iron infusions twice now. I finally found a new PCP who’s taking it seriously—he’s ordered scans of my kidneys, bladder, and appendix to figure out what UT ignored.
I will never go back to UT Athens."
