Remove Al Heggins from public office

Remove Al Heggins from public office
The Issue
As a joined collective for the people of Salisbury, NC, we hereby call for the removal of Al Heggins from the Salisbury City Council following her divisive remarks aimed at the Confederate Monument "Fame" located in downtown Salisbury following intense protests that have taken place at and around the monument in recent days following the murder of George Floyd, a Minneapolis man murdered unjustly by a city police officer who has since then been fired and arrested.
Case and point, the City of Salisbury hosted a live stream city council meeting to make up for not being able to meet in person due to COVID-19 Tuesday afternoon on into the night on June 2nd, 2020 where they seaked to discuss multiple issues that the city was facing being continuous protests surrounding George Floyd's murder, the city budget and other topics. Al Heggins took it upon herself to high jack the city council meeting that the lot of the city was watching to demand that the Fame Confederate Monument be removed immediately.
Throughout her statements, she presented letters to the city council to be read aloud for everyone to hear, all being for removing the Confederate monument. Some have since said that the letters sounded like they had been written by one person. Furthermore the city council meeting wasn't announced prior to session which leads the question, how did 16 people know to write letters to be presented in the first place?
Her reasons for why a 116 year old Confederate Monument is suddenly under fire again despite the real tragedy surrounding George Floyd and police brutality:
- The Fame Confederate Monument serves as a "disturbance to the peace" and should be removed immediately from the public space of downtown Salisbury, according to Al Heggins. She contested a North Carolina Monument Law from 2015 stating that the Fame Confederate Monument must be removed because it has attracted protesters both peaceful and violent, led to the destruction of property (Salisbury Post busted window), and because a shooting occurred at the site of the protests after a dispute next to the monument by a man from Kernersville, NC. Jeffrey Allen Long, 49.
Al was shut down by the Mayor for attempting to inject something into the city council meeting that wasn't discussed prior and for ensighting division amongst city council members and city residents.
Mayor Karen Alexander placed downtown Salisbury under a curfew from 9pm to 5am on June 2nd, 2020 following continued protests Monday night that turned too rowdy for police to contain even with riot guard and tear gas deployed. The curfew will be lifted when she decides it's safe to.
The Salisbury city council has held two meetings per month since COVID-19. Last night's meeting was the first one since COVID-19 that has had public input.
Mind everyone, the Fame Confederate Monument sits on private property owned by the United Daughters of the Confederacy.
The Fame Preservation Group who defended the monument alongside police during the protests have stated numerous times on their Facebook page that they only want to promote peace, unity and to protest against police brutality for George Floyd's sake as the Country is overwhelmed with protests and riots. The FPG has an established Monument Guard that they deployed to defend the Fame Confederate monument throughout the protests.
Witness reports confirmed to both the FPG and media outlets that Al Heggins was spotted on the ground and caught on camera by Confederate Wire Rowan throughout the protests ordering people what to do throughout the demonstration and that she is the one that led the protesters to the monument in the first place.
In 2019 when Al Heggins was still mayor of Salisbury, the Confederate monument had been vandalized with white paint splattered on it. Her administration seemingly cared no more for the monument then the perpetrators who did it and instead called for its removal at a city event at the Salisbury Civic Center. She didn't get far and, here we are again.
Al Heggins used to be the Human Relations Director for the city of High Point, she was ultimately fired by the city for ensighting division amongst city employees and for using her own human relations department to accuse the city police department through public forums.
"Heggins came into conflict with the High Point Police Department when officers took offense to a series of public forums organized by the human relations commission to discuss police-community relations. Heggins has had a discrimination complaint against the city on file with the federal Equal Employment Opportunity Commission since May, and in June she was placed on leave by City Manager Greg Demko."

There is more than enough public record on Al Heggins to say that she's questionable on being a public official given her past actions with another city.
We the people of Salisbury as the majority wish to remove Al Heggins from public office due to her divisive behavior towards city residents, for misrepresenting a preservation group for the Confederate Monument, slandering Confederate Wire Rowan for supposedly supporting white supremacy and for further deepening the racial divide in the city of Salisbury by taking advantage of the George Floyd tragedy to push her own agenda of removing a war memorial.
