Cancel the Fall Out Fan Fic event at UCB Sunset
This petition made change with 304 supporters!
On Friday, January 2nd, an event was announced by Jensen Karp (JensenClan88) on Twitter and Instagram. The event details read: "Next Thursday, Jan 8th, I will sit down with the band Fall Out Boy at UCB Sunset and read the most ridiculous Fan Fiction about them that we can find online. This is to celebrate their new album and we will have some special guests. 10:30." While the Instagram post has been deleted, the Twitter post remains up. UCB Sunset has a link posted to the event, but none of the members of Fall Out Boy have confirmed their awareness or support of such an event, despite the fact that Jensen Karp claims it was their idea and they brought the idea to him.
This event is incredibly hurtful and malicious. Publicly reading fans' writing without their permission -- for the express purpose of mocking them in front of an audience -- is cruel and out of line. It is bullying. Fan works like Fan Fiction are created out of love for the people involved, no matter how ridiculous or absurd they may seem. Many writers write in order to create what they want to see that is vastly underrepresented in the media, such as LGBTQIA relationships. Fan Fiction is art, and creative license is something Fall Out Boy has always encouraged its fans to embrace and pursue.
Holding this event will make many fans feel attacked and disrespected, even those fans whose work is not read aloud to an audience. This event will humiliate people. Please cancel this event.
Supporters: please tweet about the petition and the event to the band members to raise awareness. There is also a Tumblr link you can reblog. Thank you.
