Faith or not—freedom stands! Reinstate SRE for Years 9 and 10 at Asquith Boys High School

Faith or not—freedom stands! Reinstate SRE for Years 9 and 10 at Asquith Boys High School
The issue
Asquith Boys High School has discontinued Special Religious Education (SRE) after Year 8, despite NSW Department of Education policy and legislation indicating that SRE must be offered up to and including Year 10 where an approved provider is available.
This is not optional, it’s a legal and procedural requirement under Section 32 of the NSW Education Act 1990 and the NSW Department of Education’s own policies. Asquith Boys High has discontinued SRE after Year 8 without a formal provider withdrawal or proper documentation, and the school is complying with the rules. Students are being denied access to something they are entitled to, and that needs action taken.
Whether you're religious or not, signing this petition helps support student choice, fairness, and access to something that matters to many of us.
This isn’t just about religion—it’s about fairness. Students at Asquith Boys High are being denied a right guaranteed by law. Whether you believe or not, stand up for choice, for justice, and for the voices that deserve to be heard.
- Section 32 of the NSW Education Act 1990 mandates that time must be allowed for religious education in all government schools. It does not limit this to specific year levels.
The Department’s SRE Procedures expect schools to timetable SRE weekly for students from Kindergarten to Year 10, as long as: - An approved provider is available.
Parents have opted their child in.
If SRE is not offered, the school must: - Document that the provider has withdrawn.
Inform families of the change.
Provide alternative meaningful activities during that time.
School Address: Asquith Boys High School, Jersey St N, Asquith NSW 2077
