Fairport Better Together

The Issue

The Fairport Village Zoning Working Group is currently drafting a new zoning code.  The Village Board will be voting to approve zoning district changes this Winter 2024. The two big takeaways are below:

1) Approval of ADUs (Accessory Dwelling Unit) in all residential districts. I.E. turning your basement or attic into a separate apartment inside your home OR outright building a second structure on your property if your lot is big enough

2) Conversion of Single Family zoned districts into Multi-Family zoned districts

Why is this bad?

Out-of-town developers with little connection to Fairport will increasingly outbid first-time homebuyers and families, snapping up any available home in the Village.  Their goal?  To maximize profit by chopping homes into apartments and converting basements and attics into short-term and long-term rentals.  As more owner-occupied homes are transformed into investment properties, the very heart and soul of the Village will begin to fade, eroding the close-knit, neighborly character that makes this Village special.

This shift won't happen overnight, but over time, the impact will be undeniable.  The charming, family-oriented atmosphere that defines the Village will give way to transient living spaces and a rotating population, fundamentally altering the fabric of our community.  The Village's unique identity will slowly dissolve, one home at a time, leaving behind a place that feels more like a destination town with a collection of rental units than the vibrant, welcoming neighborhood that we know and love.

As Village residents, we need to petition the Zoning Working Group and Village Board to remove these elements from the re-zoning initiative.

Please sign this petition indicating your support for removing the following from the proposed zoning code:

1) ADUs in Village residential districts

2) Conversion of current Single Family zoned districts into Multi-Family zoned districts
