Fairness for the David Lloyd Community

Fairness for the David Lloyd Community
The Issue
Dear David Lloyd club members,
If your annual membership fee has increased by more than 3% since 2019, you have been ripped off. David Lloyd Leisure has increased fees for members beyond these contractual terms and in many instances not informed members of these increases - see section 18 https://www.davidlloyd.co.uk/-/media/david-lloyd/files/uk-terms-and-conditions-october-2019-v2
Meanwhile, David Lloyd Ltd. and parent company Deuce Holdco. Ltd. generated over £70m in operating profit and paid out £393.5m in dividends (for the financial year ending December 2018)!
see p14 of 2018 accounts - https://beta.companieshouse.gov.uk/company/01516226/filing-history
see pp 9 and 18 of 2018 accounts - https://beta.companieshouse.gov.uk/company/08655849/filing-history
When David Lloyd clubs have been contacted by members concerning these fee increases, staff have often simply ignored us. In addition:
• Our clubs are poorly managed
• Popular classes are being cut
• We see limited investment in our facilities
• Quality and safety are being compromised to save costs [notably during off-peak hours]
• Staff turnover is high
• Instructors and employees are allegedly underpaid and in instances have been unpaid.
We believe that:
• David Lloyd Leisure's fee increases are unethical and illegal
• Members should always be communicated to concerning any changes to membership fees
• It is unprofessional and unethical of clubs not to respond to members about legitimate concerns [includuing about fee increases].
We demand:
• An immediate reversal and full refund for any members, whose fees were increased from 2019 to 2020 beyond 3%
• An apology and an explanation from David Lloyd Head Office as to why fees were increased beyond 3% in January 2020 and why some members were not informed of changes
• Acknowledgement of and an apology that staff have failed to respond to emails from members
• An explanation of any investments being made at each club that justify any fee increase beyond inflationary levels of 1.5%
• A commitment to freeze membership fees in 2021
• A commitment to adhere to terms in section 18a of David Lloyd Leisure's terms and conditions in the future
• A commitment to freeze the terms of 18a of David Lloyd Leisure's terms and conditions for the next 10 years
• A commitment to respond to all emails from members in a timely manner, to address concerns and progress complaints as appropriate (in accordance with David Lloyd Leisure’s 4 Stage Escalation Process) see - https://www.davidlloyd.co.uk/contact-us
• You stop cutting popular classes and provide a rationale for removing any classes, stating how cutting classes enhances the member experience
• A commitment to far better service at our clubs.
