Lessen Restrictions on Backyard Chickens in Fairfax County, Virginia

Lessen Restrictions on Backyard Chickens in Fairfax County, Virginia

The Issue

There are numerous benefits to having backyard chickens as pets. They are lovable, easy to care for, low maintenance animals that can greatly improve Fairfax County residents’ quality of life.

Backyard chickens provide a source for organic, all natural, free-range eggs. They provide a source for organic, all natural, free-range meat. They offer an all natural method of pest control. Their droppings can contribute to excellent compost for gardens, yards, and more. They are also amazing pets and can provide incredibly valuable lessons to children and adults alike!

Current Fairfax County code states that you must have 2+ acres to have chickens without a permit. If you have under 2 acres, you can apply for a special permit. The special permit process is very lengthy and expensive, and there is no guarantee of approval. I believe lots of at least 10,000 square feet should be able to have 5 chickens. The current chicken/acre guideline rules state an acre can have 32 chickens, so 5 chickens per 10,000 square feet (for residents with smaller lots who would like chickens) would be less than the current ratio and very manageable.

With the current Coronavirus pandemic, it has become even more apparent how important it is to have a source of sustenance readily available. Let’s band together to get Fairfax County to loosen its restrictions on backyard chickens so more residents can enjoy and benefit from their many virtues!
