Fair Pay for Trial Shifts

Fair Pay for Trial Shifts
The Issue
Too many job seekers, particularly young people and those in lower-wage industries, are being exploited through unpaid trial shifts. Many have experienced the frustration of showing up for what they believed was a legitimate hiring process, only to realize by the end of their shift that they were brought in to cover a busy period because the company was short-staffed. This unfair practice leaves countless individuals working long hours, sometimes completing a full 40-hour week across different trial shifts, and still unable to afford rent or basic living expenses because they were never paid for their time. These people are left financially vulnerable while companies benefit from free labor under the guise of "assessing" potential employees. We believe that all workers should be paid at least the national minimum wage for every hour worked during a trial shift, regardless of whether or not they are offered a job.
If this practice continues, workers will remain trapped in a cycle of exploitation, giving up their time and energy with no guarantee of a job or financial reward. On the other hand, if companies are legally required to pay at least the national minimum wage for all trial shifts, it will ensure that people are compensated for their work and prevent businesses from taking advantage of desperate job seekers. This will also force companies to only schedule trial shifts when they are genuinely looking to hire, creating a more honest, fair, and transparent recruitment process. Paying national minimum wage for trial shifts will help lift job seekers out of financial insecurity and restore dignity to the hiring process.
Now is the time to act. As living costs soar, many job seekers are struggling just to get by, and unpaid labor in the form of trial shifts only deepens that struggle. It’s essential that we push for immediate change to stop companies from using unpaid trial shifts to cover staffing shortages and busy periods. Every worker deserves to be paid fairly for their labor, and this exploitation must end now. Let's stand together to demand that all trial shifts be paid at least the national minimum wage, securing fair treatment and pay for all workers.
