Fair Pay for GP Work on DVLA Medical Reports

Fair Pay for GP Work on DVLA Medical Reports
The Issue
For too long, GPs have been expected to complete medical reports and assessments for the DVLA at a fee that has remained stagnant for many years. Despite rising workloads, increasing clinical and administrative complexity, and growing demand, the fee paid for this essential work fails to reflect the time, expertise, and resources required.
The current DVLA fees:
Do not cover the full cost of clinical time, administrative support, indemnity, and infrastructure.
Have not kept pace with inflation or the increasing pressures on general practice.
Undermine the sustainability of services and draw GPs away from direct patient care.
GPs play a vital role in supporting road safety and public health by providing professional, timely assessments to the DVLA. This work should be properly recognised and fairly compensated.
We, the undersigned, call on the DVLA and the Department for Transport to:
Immediately review the current fee structure for GP-completed medical reports
Set a fair and sustainable rate that reflects the true cost of providing this service
Commit to regularly reviewing the fee in line with inflation and sector changes
It is time to value the contribution of GPs and ensure that this work is viable, not exploitative.
