Fair Infrastructure Investment for Towyn
Fair Infrastructure Investment for Towyn
The Issue
Towyn is one of the most important tourism destinations on the North Wales coast.
With approximately 60,000 tourist bed spaces, Towyn welcomes tens of thousands of overnight visitors every season. These visitors stay for days or weeks, spending money in restaurants, shops, attractions and businesses across the whole region.
Overnight visitors support the wider economy throughout Conwy County and North Wales - creating jobs and sustaining local businesses.
Yet despite the huge number of visitors Towyn welcomes & hosts each year, the town lacks many of the basic facilities that residents and tourists would reasonably expect.
Currently:
- The main bridge providing access to Towyn beach is step-only, making it difficult, and sometimes impossible for wheelchair users, mobility scooters and families with pushchairs
- Once across the bridge, there is no accessible route over the sea wall onto the beach, only steep steps
- There are no seating areas along the sea wall between Towyn and Pensarn
- There are very limited public bins in Towyn even during peak periods when the population can exceed 60,000 people
- There are no public toilet facilities, with the burden placed on local businesses despite the extra demand from tourism
- The existing sea wall, while performing its flood protection role, creates a harsh and unwelcoming environment
We are asking Conwy County Borough Council and Network Rail to work together to deliver practical improvements, including:
- An accessible crossing across the railway on Sandbank Road
- Improved access for all onto Towyn beach
- Seating areas along the sea wall between Towyn and Pensarn
- Adequate bins and public facilities that reflect the scale of tourism in the area
- A longer-term plan to improve the appearance, safety and accessibility of the seafront environment
Towyn contributes significantly to the tourism economy of North Wales. It is reasonable that the town receives infrastructure investment that reflects its importance. We are calling for a formal review of beach access, the railway crossing and seafront facilities in Towyn, with community consultation and a clear plan for improvements.
By signing this petition, you are showing support for fair, practical improvements that will benefit residents, visitors, families and the wider North Wales economy.
Please sign and share to help show how many people believe Towyn deserves better access and facilities.
