The issue

I’m a mum with a daughter who’s coeliac, she was diagnosed at 5 years old and all we were told was, “yep your daughter’s coeliac. Gluten free diet forever.” & that was it.

No guidance. No support. And definitely no financial help.

For Australians living with coeliac disease, eating gluten free isn’t a lifestyle choice, it’s the only treatment.

Yet gluten-free food can cost 2 to 4 times more than regular products. That means families, children, and individuals who are medically diagnosed with coeliac disease are being forced to carry a lifelong financial burden, just to stay safe.

We are calling on the Australian Government to:

  • Recognise gluten-free food as a medical necessity for people with coeliac disease.
  • Investigate the inflated cost of gluten free products in supermarkets and hospitality.
  • Provide financial compensation, subsidies, or tax rebates for medically diagnosed coeliacs.

This is a health issue, not a dietary trend. For people with coeliac disease, gluten-free food isn’t a preference, it’s their prescription.

When coeliac families are paying $8.00 for a loaf of gluten free bread while regular bread is $4.20, it’s not just unfair, it’s unsustainable.

Support this petition if you believe Australians with medically diagnosed coeliac disease deserve equal, affordable access to safe food, without paying a lifelong premium.
