FAIR COMPENSATION FOR PLASMA DONORS

FAIR COMPENSATION FOR PLASMA DONORS
The Issue
Petition to Address the Undercompensation of Plasma Donors
To: Legislative Body, Health Authorities, and Plasma Collection Companies
Date: 10/06/2024
Subject: Fair Compensation for Plasma Donors
I Craig Montoya Sr. am writing to express a deep concern about the current compensation rates for plasma donors. Plasma donation is a vital service that directly impacts the health and well-being of countless patients worldwide. Plasma is essential for treating a range of medical conditions, including immune deficiencies, bleeding disorders, and burns, and yet the individuals who make this lifesaving contribution are often under compensated for their time and effort.
Plasma donation is not only a physically taxing process but also a time-intensive one. Donors spend hours undergoing medical evaluations and the donation process itself, during which they often experience fatigue or discomfort. In light of the significant commitment required, it is only fair that donors are compensated at a rate that reflects both the time and the physical toll associated with the procedure.
Currently, many plasma donors receive minimal compensation, which does not adequately cover the costs associated with transportation, time off from work, or other expenses. This undercompensation disproportionately affects lower-income individuals, who often turn to plasma donation as a way to supplement their income, despite the personal risks and inconveniences involved.
I believe that a fair and just society should ensure that those who make lifesaving contributions are adequately recognized and compensated. Therefore, we call on:
1. Plasma collection companies to increase the rate of compensation for donors to reflect the true value of their time and the importance of their contribution.
2. Legislators and health authorities to establish and enforce minimum compensation standards for plasma donors across all donation centers.
3. The public to support these changes to ensure that plasma donation remains a sustainable and ethical practice.
By providing fair compensation, we can ensure a steady supply of plasma for medical treatments, while also respecting the rights and well-being of plasma donors. We urge you to take immediate action to address this critical issue.
Thank you for your time, attention and consideration.
Sincerely,
Craig Montoya Sr.
