Fair Access to Water and Sewer Services. Hillside Road Brooklyn Nova Scotia and surroundin

The Issue

To: Mavor Scott Christian and Council

Region of Queens Municipality

We, the undersigned residents of Hillside Road and

surrounding communities, are coming together to ask

for fairness, basic services, and respect for the people

and ratepayers who already call this area home.

For years, residents on Hillside Road have lived without

access to essential water and sewer infrastructure.

Services that manv consider a basic standard of living.

At the same time, significant public funding, over $21.5

million. is being directed toward expanding these

services to support new developments in areas like

Mount Pleasant. Specifically two private developments

which include 325 new builds over 1km away from

existing supply. Both of which qualify for their own

on-site water and sewer.

We are not opposed to growth. We welcome it. But

growth should not come at the expense of those who

have been here all along.

It is deeplv concerning that long-standing residents and

ratepavers continue to go without fundamental

services, while new developments are being

prioritized. This concern is heightened by the reality

that our town was already forced to ration water

during last vear's drought. Expanding development

while relying on the same existing water supply creates

a real and immediate risk of shortages.

Without a clear backup source or a plan to secure a

sustainable water supply, both residents and

ratepayers are being placed at significant risk, both

financiallv and in terms of basic access to water. This is

especiallv troubling given recent rate increases of over

60% and still rising, placing an even heavier burden on

households alreadv feeling overlooked

We respectfully call on Council to:

-Put existing residents and ratepayers first by ensuring

Hillside Road receives essential water and sewer

services before further expansion into new

development areas.

-Pause or delay extensions to Mount Pleasant

developments until long-standing service gaps are

addressed.

-Use public funds fairly and responsibly, prioritizing

communities that have waited the longest for basic

infrastructure.

-Develop and communicate a clear, sustainable water

supply plan before approving additional strain on

existing systems.

-Protect ratepayers from further risk and financia

burden caused by premature or poorly planned

infrastructure expansion.

Whv This Matters

This is about more than infrastructure. it' s about

fairness, safety, and the responsible use of public

funds. Ratepavers should not be asked to shoulder

increasing costs while still lacking access to basic

services, nor should thev be put at risk of water

shortages due to over extension of existing systems.

No one should feel like they come second in their owr

community. Every resident and ratepayer deserves

equal consideration when it comes to essential services

that impact health, safety, and quality of life.

We are asking for balance. We are asking to be heard.

And we are asking to be treated with the same priority

as new development.

Sign this petition to stand with your neighbors and

protect residents, ratepayers, and the future

sustainability of our community.
