Fair Access to Parking: Petition Against Two-Car Limit for Residents in Deep Cove

Fair Access to Parking: Petition Against Two-Car Limit for Residents in Deep Cove
The Issue
Fair Access to Parking: Petition Against Two-Car Limit in District of North Vancouver, Deep Cove.
We are concerned residents of Deep Cove, within District of North Vancouver (DNV), who rely on street parking for our vehicles. Recently, the DNV has implemented a policy converting all residential road parking into permit parking zones. While we understand the need for regulation and limiting parking times for tourists, we believe that the current policy unfairly restricts households to only two parking permits for two specific cars. This limitation poses significant challenges for families and individuals who own more than two vehicles, impacting their ability to access essential services, commute to work and school, and maintain their daily lives. A lot of residents, including myself, rely on my vehicle due to limited public transportation options.
Issue: The implementation of the two-car limit per household overlooks the diverse needs of residents and fails to accommodate households with multiple vehicles. It is not uncommon for families to own more than two cars due to family size and various reasons such as work, school, childcare, and personal commitments. By restricting parking permits to only two specific vehicles per household, the DNV is imposing unnecessary hardships on its residents, leading to inconvenience, frustration, and scheduling strain.
Petition Objective: We urge the District of North Vancouver to reconsider its parking policy and revise it to allow fair access to parking permits for all residents who own vehicles within a household. Specifically, we request the following changes:
- Remove the two-car limit per household and allow households to obtain permits for all vehicles they own.
- Implement a fair and equitable system for distributing parking permits that considers the number of vehicles owned by each household.
Impact: By removing the two-car limit and granting permits for all vehicles within a household, the DNV can ensure that residents have adequate access to parking, reducing unnecessary stress, and mitigating the negative impacts of limited parking availability. This change will promote inclusivity, fairness, and accessibility for all residents, regardless of their household's vehicle ownership.
As concerned residents of Deep Cove, we believe that everyone should have equal access to parking permits, regardless of the number of vehicles they own. My family, like many others in Deep Cove, have children that have saved up to pay for their own vehicles to access necessities such as school and work; Without a parking pass, they will now have to plan to move their car, on their own street, every 3 hours as well as avoid parking spots that we have been parking in for years. On weekdays my residential street is mostly empty, so why should I have to move my car every 3 hours to avoid being ticketed? We call upon the DNV to listen to the voices of its residents and amend its parking policy to reflect the diverse needs of the community. By signing this petition, we stand together in advocating for fair access to parking permits in our neighborhood.
