PETITION FOR ONLINE EXAMINATIONS, SEM 1 2021/2022 SESSION, UNIVERSITY MALAYA
Why this petition matters
With the sudden rise of Covid-19 cases throughout the country as well as within the university, it has become relatively risky to carry out physical exams for various reasons. The University Malaya's Faculty of Engineering, Faculty of Built Environment, Centre for Sport and Exercise Science are is adamant on having physical examinations although the largest contributor to clusters in Malaysia is the education sector.
Even though faculty has announced that those students who're covid positive or close contact can apply for Grade I (INCOMPLETE) , however this is not a good solution because applying for Grade I, means sitting for the exam much later, and we believe many students do not want to delay their exam. Hence this will lead to close contact or positive covid students to not report honestly and sneak into the exam hall just to sit for their finals on time, hiding the fact that they're probably infected which will eventually lead to a whole new cluster. Furthermore, in JULY 2021 when we only had 7000+- cases (with low vaccination rates) , exams were conducted online along with MID-TERMS in DEC 2021 when we had 3000-5000+- cases (with majority of students being fully vaccinated ), assessments were carried out online.
Several actions have been done from the student’s side to convey our concerns to the HoD and Dean. We have done various feedback forms and reports by emailing to not only the HoD, but also HEP (Hal Ehwal Pelajar), AASC (Academic Administration and Service Centre), and the faculty’s Dean as for the past few weeks. In the survey, it can be summarised that majority of the students would like to propose an e-proctored online examination mode which already available in the Spectrum. For your kind information, most of the students and lecturers are familiar in using this e-proctoring tool for mid-term tests and exams. So, it wouldn’t be an issue of ‘trial and error’ anymore. Unfortunately, our voices were not heard instead we were told to not further speculate this issue anymore and focus on our studies for the physical final exams.
We hope the faculty respectfully hears the pleas of the students as safety is our main concern. We believe the faculty should run the final examinations completely online with proctoring to ensure the integrity of the examination is upheld. The faculty should make a decision as soon as they can as the finals are starting on the 7th of February 2022.
