The Issue

Due to the Corona Virus outbreak, Wentworth facutly has opted to take part in online learning which takes place in the homes of the students that attend the institution. There is no doubt in the hearts and minds of the students and faculty that this decision, although beneficial to halting the spread of a dangerous disease, is detrimental to the learning of students. Wentworth Institute of Technology claims to be an institution based around learning through resources, research, and experience. If you need an example, look no further than the slogan of the institution, "The University of Now" where they state at the forefront of their website that "It's what we do right now that defines our future. At Wentworth, we dive into learning headfirst in labs, studios and the real world. Get started here". Due to the COVID-19 Outbreak, students no longer have access to such resources and thus put us at a disadvantage as students and when it comes to the Wentworth standard of learning. As an employee of the library, I have seen firsthand the vast number of excellent references and sources that students can take advantage of as they sit in the library working on lab reports or homework. However, with the library being completely shut down and ID's deactivated at the hands of faculty, how can we reach "University of Now" standards?

It is here that I propose a solution which is based upon the decisions of some of the best schools in the nation, with some right in our backyard. Wentworth should switch learning to a "Universal Pass". What is Universal Pass?

As MIT approaches it: "At MIT, no letter grade will be given in any undergraduate or graduate course. Instead, students will receive a passing grade, an incomplete grade, or a no-record mark, which will not show up on a student's transcript. Each grade will be marked with an "E" — such as "PE" for a passing grade — to indicate that an emergency prevented students from receiving a traditional letter grade" (As Penn students petition, some schools have already adopted pass/fail grading).

A Universal Pass approach to this semester would ease the stress of the COVID-19 outbreak and the challenges that come along with lack of resources from remote learning. If you believe this is a beneficial approach to this semester, please sign this petition. Any amount of signatures may allow Wentworth to take this into effect. Thank you and good luck to my fellow students on this semester in social distancing. Please stay safe and I wish you all the best!
