Alberta, one of Canada's richest provinces, has a significant interest in separating from Canada to join the United States as its 51st state. This is not an arbitrary pursuit but one born out of economic and political concerns. Alberta's oil industry, a vital part of its robust economy, suffers due to multiple bureaucratic red tape and difficulties in getting the product to foreign markets, a struggle felt less by its US counterparts. Moreover, a study by Calgary’s School of Public Policy reported a fiscal gap of around CAD 20 billion, a disparity in what Alberta contributes to federal coffers and receives in return (Fraser Institute, 2019). Joining the United States, where oil-rich states like Alaska and Texas enjoy a different system of governance, has long been an intriguing consideration for many Albertans.
