Petition for social media platforms to require government issued ID at sign up!

The Issue

Today we have seen the negative impacts online bullying has.

With social media platforms making account creation so easily accessible, what are they really doing to try and address the issue of trolling and online bullying?

Around 4,400 deaths every single year are in relation to bullying and in particular, cyber bullying. (Source: bullyingstatistics.org).

My own son (aged 14) received messages of a sexual nature on Instagram from a troll/fake account. I immediately reported this account to be told by Instagram that this account “didn’t violate community standards”. There was no option to screen shot and attach actual messages. THIS NEEDS TO CHANGE also!

It is about time that social media platforms were forced to change their policies to make social media as safe a place for not only us, but our children.

I am petitioning for social media platforms to sit up and actually pay attention to it’s users and incorporate the requirement of government issued ID upon sign up and also put in place more sufficient reporting tools to enable direct/private messages to be reported so that the appropriate action can be taken in relation to troll accounts. Reporting tools are not always easily accessible on mobile devices. These must be made easily accessible across all devices and fully understandable for all age ranges.

I have tried to approach social media platforms on my own previously, but I need a bigger voice. I would appreciate your help greatly!
