Boycott Gobsmack. Hold Sully Erna accountable for his words.

The Issue

It is important that people are held to account with the things that they say.

Sully Erna, vocalist/guitarist of the band Gobsmack, decided that he would share the last days of another musician who lost his life to brain cancer. That person was Neil Peart of pioneering Canadian Metal/Rock/Prog band Rush.

In an interview he gave to Blabbermouth.net, he shared information of Neil's last few months on earth. He proposed that Neil was a good friend of his. What a way to show it, it was callous and highly insensitive.

This an excerpt from that interview, please make your own mind up.

"Growing up, I will say that [Neil] was probably the single most influential musician in my life. Erna got the opportunity to meet Neil multiple times and become friends with him. I think we may have one of the last on-camera interviews with Neil, recently, when he agreed to do an interview for the director of this feature documentary we're doing on my life story. He sat down in his whole drumming warehouse place and talked about me and Shannon's playing and our drum solo and how impressed he was with the whole thing. And then soon after that, I heard he had gotten sick. He knew about Peart's battle with brain cancer for a while, but was asked, out of respect for Neil and the privacy he liked to live in, to just not say anything. But I knew, when they were ending the Rush tour, that he was sick. I knew it, even up to a year ago or so, he was in a wheelchair and he couldn't speak. And it was just becoming more and more sad to me''.

The interview does not come off sincere, and is a very hard thing to read or hear. It was never going to be necessary to give those details. He kept saying that he was a ''close friend'' of Neil Peart, i know of nobody who would give that kind of detail other than to somehow make gains for themselves.

He could not have been that close a friend, because even just the passing fans of Rush knew that Neil Peart was an intensely private man. He would not have wanted people to remember him in that way. I believe that Neil himself would be outraged if he could know what Sully Erna has said about the last days of his life, i doubt they would have remained friends.

Sully Erna, has to held to account for the insensitive nature of his comments.

This can not go unchecked.

Please sign the petition, and at the very least make Sully Erna see that what he said was not appropriate so close to the death of the person he was talking about. Perhaps there never was going to be a time for this information to be made public, but if it was, it was not Sully Erna's place to tell it.
