Eyebot is a visual acuity testing service that works by prompting patients to answer a series of health questions followed by visual acuity testing that is then sent to an offsite doctor to review the test and prescription. They claim that their mission is to "make vision care accessible to everyone." They originally had a partnership with Zenni optical in which users were then prompted to purchase Zenni eyewear, but they have since expanded their product into 16 Walmart and Sam's Club locations in Pennsylvania. In many of the locations they have expanded to, there used to be an onsite doctor to perform optometric care. The company does provide a disclaimer that their service is not a comprehensive eye exam, but there will be undoubtable patient confusion. Based on facts obtained and reported by the AOA, Eyebot has already received detailed complaints from the FDA and the Federal trade commission. Walmarts oversight poses a serious threat to patient health, safety, and awareness. It is important as optometry students that we only extend the privilege of speaking to the student body to organizations that are promoting patient health and care. We do not believe that Walmart should be given this privilege until their leadership publicly commits itself to acceptable health quality safeguard and care mechanisms.
