Extending and Protecting the Freedom of Quail Hollow Middle School Students

Extending and Protecting the Freedom of Quail Hollow Middle School Students
The Issue
Quail Hollow Middle School has passed recent legislation that forbids students from listening to music during classes, even if allowed to within the classroom. Music has been proven to improve performance, according to Help Scout Inc, which states in an article: “In one study involving information technology specialists, [Dr. Lesink] found that those who listened to music completed their tasks more quickly and came up with better ideas than those who didn’t, because the music improved their mood.” The same article states “It may be beneficial to listen to music you are familiar with if you need to intensely focus for a project. The reason being is that new music is surprising; since you don’t know what to expect, you are inclined to listen closely to see what comes next.” Given the variety in students’ musical tastes and the beneficial effects of music on student concentration, students in QHMS would see an improvement in their grades if they were allowed to listen to music on personal devices.
In addition to the aforementioned atrocity, Quail Hollow Middle School has had the audacity to constrict the free time and socialization of students by arranging assigned seating for students during lunch. On top of this, the VIP privileges given to the students exemplifying the mission of Quail Hollow Middle School — to help students S.O.A.R. on the P.A.T.H. to college — may possibly be collectively revoked. These VIP privileges are a reward to students; they provide incentive for students to do well.
These restrictions call for students to take action — the petition below will show the collective student body’s discontent with the recent legislation of Quail Hollow Middle School and will prompt communication with the principal, Mrs. Rachael Neill, via an individual letter. This oppression and constriction of freedoms for the students of Quail Hollow Middle School cannot be allowed to continue. Sign the petition today!
