Extend Winter Break for LCPS Schools Students and Faculty

Extend Winter Break for LCPS Schools Students and Faculty
The Issue
I am a student in Loudoun County Public Schools (LCPS) who, along with many others, has greatly benefited from the restorative power of winter break. In past years, this time off has provided us with much-needed respite and an opportunity to reset before diving back into our studies. However, recent changes to the academic calendar have shortened our winter breaks significantly.
Traditionally, our winter break would start around December 19th and end on January 2nd - a total of 15 days. This year however, it starts on December 21st and ends on January 1st - only 12 days. Looking ahead at the schedule for the academic year of 2024-2025, it's even worse; starting on December 22nd and ending on January 2nd.
The reduction in break length may seem minor to some but can have serious implications for students' mental health by not allowing enough time to reset and refresh. It's not just about having time off; it's about ensuring that students are mentally prepared to tackle their studies effectively when they return.
According to Gaggle, Loudoun County Public Schools’ device management software, states “The National Association on Mental Illness reports that half of all chronic mental illness begins by 14 years of age, and between Thanksgiving and the New Year, busy schedules and sky-high expectations from family and friends can lead to feelings of loneliness and depression.”
We ask that LCPS reconsider their decision regarding the duration of winter breaks. Extending them back to their original length would be a significant step towards prioritizing student well-being, over rigid scheduling norms.
Please sign this petition if you believe in supporting student mental health by extending LCPS Schools' winter breaks for both students and faculty members.
