Extend Weekends to Three Days for Better Student Well-being

The Issue

We live in a time characterized by mounting pressure on young learners with a constant demand for high achievers. Speaking as someone personally challenged by this rat race, I think the stress becomes overwhelming.

Various research studies, like the one by the American Psychological Association, reveal that teens report stress levels higher than what is considered healthy, mostly from their education. Homework, exams, expectations of teachers and parents, all pile up, leaving very little time to unwind.

Current society's standard of a two-day weekend isn't enough for students to relax, pursue hobbies, engage in physical activities, and essentially recharge themselves for the following productive week.

Let's consider Finland's example, a country celebrated for its educational model, where less school hours as compared to the US has resulted in happier children and negligible homework. Unlike the typical Monday to Friday school week, considering an additional rest day that extends the weekend to three days might be a new solution for us to explore. This approach is reasonable and could significantly improve the quality of life and mental well-being of our students.

Ultimately, a well-rested, less stressed student will be a better learner, and will lead to a healthier, more productive society as a whole.

Join me in urging schools nationwide to make a change. Extend our weekends to three days and let our children breathe. Please sign this petition.
