The Issue

For those of us at Colgate University who juggle work and academics, finding time to prioritize our health can be incredibly challenging. Currently, the Trudy Fitness Center closes at 5 pm on weekends, making it nearly impossible for students like me who work over the weekend to use the facility. This limitation is not just a personal inconvenience; it is a significant barrier to maintaining and improving our health and fitness, which is vital for our overall well-being and academic success.

The benefits of regular exercise are well-documented: improved mental health, increased energy levels, and better focus, all of which contribute directly to academic excellence. This need is especially pressing during the winter months, when freezing temperatures and icy conditions make outdoor exercise unsafe or unrealistic. While Colgate has recently emphasized the importance of winter wellness in university communications, students are not being given the practical tools or access needed to follow through on those recommendations.

Importantly, the Trudy Fitness Center previously operated from 9 am to 9 pm on weekends, demonstrating that extended hours are both feasible and beneficial. The current reduced schedule represents a step backward in student access to wellness resources, despite increased awareness of mental health and well-being on campus.

For students striving to maintain a healthy lifestyle amidst demanding schedules and harsh weather conditions, access to indoor fitness facilities is crucial. Many universities recognize this reality and offer extended hours to accommodate students’ varying commitments. It is time for Colgate University to acknowledge this need and act upon it.

By extending the Trudy Fitness Center's weekend operating hours to 8 am to 9 pm, the university would demonstrate a genuine commitment to student health and well-being. This is not merely a convenience for a few students, but a necessary adjustment to support many who struggle to fit essential physical activity into their academic, work, and personal responsibilities. Extended hours would provide all students, regardless of schedule or weather constraints, the opportunity to prioritize their physical health, ultimately fostering a healthier campus community.

Supporting this petition means advocating for a campus environment that aligns its wellness messaging with meaningful action. Let’s urge Colgate University to extend its weekend hours at the Trudy Fitness Center. Sign the petition to help make this change a reality.
