Extend Utah County's curfew for Teens

Extend Utah County's curfew for Teens
The Issue
Growing up in Utah County, I've watched as the current curfew has limited opportunities for teens 16-19 like me and many of my peers to engage in meaningful social activities by forcing the shut down of the events. The existing curfew laws, which require people under 18 to be off the streets by a certain time, have inadvertently curtailed our ability to socialize in safe and controlled environments. This well-meaning law often pushes young people to seek unstructured activities that increase risk rather than providing a framework for structured freedom.
Studies have shown that social interaction is crucial for teenage development. According to the American Academy of Pediatrics, social connections during adolescence enhance interpersonal skills and emotional well-being. Instead of forcing young adults into situations lacking adult supervision, communities should foster environments where teens can interact responsibly. Statistics from the National Center for Biotechnology Information reveal that youth engaged in supervised social activities are less likely to indulge in risky behaviors compared to those restricted by strict curfews.
In Utah County, we pride ourselves on nurturing and developing well-rounded individuals. However, the current curfew policy stifles our youth's growth and learning experiences by limiting their time for interaction. Extending the curfew by just an hour could provide ample opportunity for young people to enjoy social settings in structured environments, under the guidance of responsible adults and mentors. Moreover, this adjustment could alleviate the unnecessary strain on law enforcement resources caused by policing teens for curfew violations.
We propose a dialogue among local authorities, parents, educators, and the youth to re-evaluate and potentially extend the curfew time. With this change, Utah County can become a model for other communities that seek to balance youth freedom with public safety. By extending the curfew, we are investing in the safe social development of our youth, ensuring they have the freedom to grow in nurturing community settings.
I urge you to join me in calling for a reconsideration of the current curfew policy. Let's advocate for structured freedom that benefits not only the young people of Utah County but the community as a whole. Please sign this petition to extend Utah counties curfew.
