Extend the Limited Public Service Loan Forgiveness (PSLF) Waiver or Make it Permanent

Extend the Limited Public Service Loan Forgiveness (PSLF) Waiver or Make it Permanent
Why this petition matters

To the United States Congress,
Before the Limited PSLF Waiver was introduced on October 6, 2021, many of us had given up hope of ever seeing our loans forgiven. The Waiver addresses many of the systematic problems that caused harm to thousands of people who dedicated their lives to public service work. The Waiver ends on October 31, 2022; however, the same problems continue to exist. Additionally, many people remain unaware that the waiver applies to them.
1. When contacting FedLoan Servicing, it continues to be extremely difficult to receive accurate information. Information given varies or is contradictory when speaking to different representatives making it difficult for borrowers to understand how to complete the application process.
2. It remains extremely difficult to correct inaccuracies or missing information when these exist on borrower accounts.
3. Teachers should continue to be allowed to count their time under Teacher Loan Forgiveness toward PSLF even after October.
4. Those who worked in Public Service should continue to receive credit for periods of repayment under any plan count.
5. Payments that were late or made for less than the amount due should continue to count for borrowers who worked in public service when these payments were made.
6. Borrowers should continue to receive credit for periods of repayment on FFEL and Perkins Loans.
7. Periods of repayment before consolidation, even while borrowers were in the wrong repayment plan should continue to count as many of us have received inaccurate information for years.
8. Borrowers who completed 10 or more years of public service work and have now left their jobs should be allowed to apply for forgiveness at any time and not be forced to either take another public service job to apply for forgiveness or stay at a job for months or years while their application is being processed.
The people who dedicated their lives to serving others instead of taking higher paying public sector jobs deserve your help. For these reasons, we ask that you extend or make the Limited Waiver rules permanent.
