Extend the Affordable Connectivity Program for Continued Access to Essential Services

The Issue

I am deeply concerned about the impending loss of internet access for many young people who rely on it for their education, as well as older individuals who depend on telehealth services. The Affordable Connectivity Program (ACP) has been a lifeline in these challenging times, but its discontinuation threatens to disconnect us from these essential services.

The ACP has played an instrumental role in ensuring that students can continue their education remotely and participate fully in online school days. Without this program, many students will be left without the means to access their coursework or engage with their teachers and peers. This is not just about maintaining academic progress; it's about preserving social connections and mental health during a period of isolation.

Moreover, the ACP has been invaluable for older people who have turned to telehealth services amidst the pandemic. According to data from CDC, telehealth visits increased by 154% during the last week of March 2020 compared with the same period in 2019 (CDC, 2020). With this trend likely continuing due to ongoing health concerns, we cannot afford to lose such a critical resource.

We urge our representatives not only consider extending ACP but also recognize its importance as an essential service provider. Our society's most vulnerable members should not have to choose between staying connected or risking their health and education. Please sign this petition if you believe everyone deserves affordable connectivity.
