Extend summer break in Beaverton School District

Extend summer break in Beaverton School District
The Issue
As a student in the Beaverton School District, I've always looked forward to summer break, a time meant for recharging, exploring new hobbies, spending quality time with family, and simply enjoying the freedom from the usual school routine. However, our current summer break is only about 70 days long, which feels too short to truly unwind and explore all of these opportunities.
Summer is that cherished period where we can take a pause from academics, focus on mental and emotional well-being, travel, or even build skills that are often overlooked during the academic year. Studies have shown that extended breaks help students in catching up on rest, improving mental health, and even gaining real-world experiences through internships or volunteer work. A longer summer break would provide the perfect balance, enabling us to return to school rejuvenated and ready to tackle the next academic year with renewed vigor.
Many students find that the existing summer break doesn't provide enough time to decompress from the rigors of school life. Adding approximately a month to the summer break not only aligns with developmental needs but also offers parents and children more flexibility in planning vacations or engaging in summer programs that often exceed the current break period.
While concerns might arise about the impact on the academic calendar, there are feasible solutions. Adjustments could be made by slightly shortening other breaks or starting the academic year earlier. With the right planning, both academic requirements and extended summer relaxation can be harmoniously achieved.
Extending the summer vacation would not only benefit students but also teachers who need time to prepare for the next school year and develop new teaching strategies. A longer summer break is an investment in our collective educational experience.
Join me in urging the Beaverton School District to extend our summer break to be extended and ensure that students, teachers, and parents alike can enjoy a well-deserved rest. Sign this petition to support a healthier, more balanced school calendar for our community.
