SkyTrain for Surrey

Jun 21, 2018
Hi again everyone!
We have something to celebrate: our petition signature count has surpassed 5,000 signatures. We are grateful to have received this acknowledgment from so many of you in the community!
Earlier this morning we received a major announcement that signifies that our efforts are working: Councillor Bruce Hayne has resigned from the Surrey First party, citing disagreements with its vision, and breaking the single-party domination of Surrey's City Council that has favoured LRT.
Councillor Hayne noted specifically - in a statement to the Surrey Now-Leader - that a large part of his disagreement is his feeling that a large percentage of residents are now opposed to the Surrey LRT vision. He has also stated that he desires to see more public engagement on the Surrey-Langley line, for which there is still a possibility that it is built as our SkyTrain: Expo Line Langley Extension. This is huge!
As we approach the October municipal elections we may see additional parties and individuals come forward with a strong stance on rapid transit technology - something that every one of you on board has helped us achieved!
As an example, the 'People First Surrey' party have taken an active position against light rail and are favouring a SkyTrain-oriented transit system on their election platform. They will be hosting an open house and discussion panel this weekend, and rapid transit in Surrey ("SkyTrain vs LRT") will be the featured topic. The panel will be moderated by the Indo-American Press Club and Cloverdale Toastmasters, taking place this SATURDAY JUNE 23 between 2:30 to 3:30 PM. We encourage your participation!

Further events to raise awareness of this issue are currently being planned. On June 5th, we hosted our first "RALLY AGAINST LRT" event - holding up signs and display boards at one of the busiest intersections in the city, to be witnessed by hundreds of commuters passing through. We send our warmest thanks to those in attendance and to others helping raise awarenes of these issues in our city.

We also encourage you to join our discussion group on Facebook to discuss #SurreyLRT issues and other matters. The group name is "Light Rail is NOT for Surrey": https://www.facebook.com/groups/nolrt4surrey/
As SkyTrain for Surrey continues to look at community outreach efforts, we need your help to get involved! Near-future activities will include rallies, flyer creation/distribution, and other forms of public outreach. We encourage you to get in touch with us by filling in the form at http://skytrainforsurrey.org/volunteer/ and also, follow us on Twitter at @SkyTrain4Surrey.
Once again our warmest thanks for your support!
