Extend skilled worker visa grace period to 90 days in the United Kingdom

Extend skilled worker visa grace period to 90 days in the United Kingdom
The Issue
I am a skilled worker in the United Kingdom and understand firsthand the stress and uncertainty faced by many in our community when we lose our jobs. Under the current system, skilled workers on sponsored visas have only 60 days to secure a new employer to sponsor their visa. This short timespan creates immense pressure and can lead to many talented professionals having to leave the country simply because they cannot secure a new role quickly enough.
In today's competitive job market, 60 days is often not enough time to find a position that is a suitable match for our skills and experience, especially when we are required to find employers who are registered sponsors. This period also includes the time necessary for interviews, job applications, and possible relocation, all of which can be time-consuming processes.
The current 60-day grace period does not acknowledge the complexities involved in the recruitment process for skilled positions. Extending this to 90 days will alleviate immediate pressure on skilled workers and allow us to contribute more effectively to our industries and communities. The UK stands to benefit significantly by retaining skilled professionals who are already contributing to the economy rather than losing them due to an inflexible timeframe.
Data from countries with more flexible visa policies demonstrate higher retention rates of skilled workers. For example, Germany offers a 90-day grace period, allowing more time for skilled professionals to transition while still maintaining economic productivity.
By extending the skilled worker visa grace period to 90 days, we will provide a more compassionate, reasonable, and pragmatic approach that reflects the realities skilled workers face in the job market.
Support this change for a more equitable and economically robust United Kingdom. Please sign this petition to ask the UK government to extend the grace period for skilled worker visas from 60 to 90 days.
