Extend Piccadilly Line Services to Turnham Green Station During District Line Disruptions

The Issue

To: Transport for London (TfL), The Mayor of London, and the London Assembly

We, the undersigned, call upon Transport for London (TfL) to extend Piccadilly Line services to Turnham Green station during periods when the District Line is disrupted, as has been done between 10:30 PM and 6:50 AM. This extension would alleviate the inconveniences faced by commuters and align with existing laws, legislations, and policies aimed at improving accessibility, reducing traffic congestion, and mitigating CO2 emissions.

Current Services at Turnham Green: Turnham Green station is already served by the Piccadilly Line during late-night hours, from 10:30 PM to 6 AM. Extending these services during District Line disruptions would not be a significant logistical challenge, as the infrastructure and staff are already in place. The Piccadilly Line is a logical alternative during such disruptions, and this extension can be viewed as a continuation of existing service rather than a new endeavor.

Proximity to Other Stations: The closest Piccadilly Line stations to Turnham Green are Acton Town and Hammersmith. These stations are a considerable distance away, and the inconvenience caused by the lack of alternative transport options during District Line disruptions is evident. Acton Town is approximately 1.5 miles (2.4 kilometers) away, and Hammersmith is approximately 2.5 miles (4 kilometers) from Turnham Green. The considerable distance between these stations can lead to additional commute time and increased expenses for passengers.

Impact of District Line Disruptions: District Line disruptions have wide-ranging consequences for commuters and the local community. These disruptions affect people's daily commute to work, leading to delays and overcrowding on alternative routes. The result is not only frustrated passengers but also increased traffic congestion in the local community as many opt for road transportation.

The reliance on railway replacement buses during District Line disruptions not only inconveniences passengers but also contributes to higher CO2 emissions due to the increased use of buses and personal vehicles. This runs contrary to TfL's commitment to sustainability and reduced carbon emissions in the city.

Recommendations: We urge TfL to take the following actions to address these issues:

Extend Piccadilly Line Services: Implement an extension of Piccadilly Line services to Turnham Green station during District Line disruptions, providing a more convenient and eco-friendly alternative.

Reduction of Traffic Congestion: By offering a reliable alternative on the Piccadilly Line, traffic congestion in the local community can be reduced, benefiting both residents and businesses.

Sustainability: Align this extension with TfL's sustainability objectives by reducing the need for replacement buses, thereby lowering CO2 emissions.

By signing this petition, we voice our collective support for an accessible, efficient, and environmentally responsible public transport system in London. We trust that TfL will recognize the significance of this extension, as it not only aligns with existing laws and policies but also serves the best interests of Londoners.

Sincerely,

Samira Sylvester
