Extend Paternity Leave for UK Fathers to 8 Weeks with Full Pay

The Issue

As a new dad, I’ve quickly realized how important it is to have time with my newborn in these first precious weeks. The limited amount of paternity leave currently offered in the UK raises a critical issue: how are new fathers supposed to build a meaningful bond with their child in such a short amount of time? The early days of a newborn's life are crucial for emotional bonding, not only for the mother but for the father as well. Yet, with only two weeks of statutory leave, many fathers are forced to return to work just as they begin adjusting to fatherhood and supporting their partner.

Our petition is a call for change. We’re advocating for the UK government to extend paid paternity leave to 8 weeks for all fathers. At present, the UK only provides two weeks of statutory paternity leave, with financial support capped at £151.20 per week or 90% of the father’s average weekly earnings, whichever is lower. For most families, this is neither enough time nor enough financial support to enable fathers to play an active role in the early stages of their child’s life. We believe that extending and fully funding paternity leave is not just a matter of individual choice but a societal necessity. The benefits go beyond the family unit. Research shows that fathers who are more involved from the start tend to remain more engaged in their child’s upbringing, creating stronger, healthier family dynamics. Longer paid leave would not only ease the immediate pressure on mothers, giving them more support during this physically and emotionally demanding period, but it also allows fathers to take an equal share in caregiving duties, which sets a foundation for a more balanced partnership in the long run. Moreover, extended paternity leave can significantly contribute to workplace equality. In many cases, the lack of adequate paternity leave means that women bear the brunt of childcare responsibilities, which can impact their careers. This disparity perpetuates gender inequality in the workplace, as women are often viewed as more likely to take time off or prioritize family over work. By normalizing longer paternity leave, we can help dismantle these outdated gender norms and reduce discrimination that women often face in professional settings. Fathers taking more active roles in childcare from the outset would shift perceptions of parental responsibilities, benefiting both men and women. Countries like Norway offer a compelling example. Norwegian fathers are entitled to up to 14 weeks of paid paternity leave, and this policy has had positive effects on families and society. According to a report by Time Magazine, Norway’s progressive parental leave policies have not only strengthened the father-child bond but also redefined the role of fathers within the family and society. Fathers are seen as equally important caregivers, and this has created a culture of shared parenting that benefits everyone. In the UK, we lag behind many European nations in supporting fathers, but we believe it’s time to catch up. Extending paternity leave to 8 weeks is a realistic and necessary step toward fostering gender equality and promoting the well-being of both parents and children. It would give fathers more time to bond with their newborns and better support their partners, while also alleviating the financial strain many families feel during this period. This change would pave the way for a more equitable and family-friendly society. We are urging the UK government to take action and extend paid paternity leave to 8 weeks. This small but significant step would benefit countless families and move us closer to true gender equality. We ask you to stand with us and sign this petition to create a positive change for fathers, mothers, and children across the UK. Together, we can help create a fairer, more supportive environment for new parents.
