The Issue

As a single parent, I am faced with the challenge of managing finances while ensuring that my son attends McMaster University daily. We reside in an area where accessing GO Transit requires a one hour drive, followed by an additional 90-minute bus ride to the university. This lengthy commute is impractical, which is why my son opts to drive directly to campus. Unfortunately, he frequently receives $30 parking tickets because the street parking near the university is limited to just two hours. This situation is burdensome for our family, especially given the costs involved: gasoline, bus passes, OSAP, and now, frequent parking fines.

The issue of parking for students around McMaster University is both unfair and unsustainable. The current two-hour parking limit on nearby streets is not feasible for students who commute long distances and spend most of their day on campus attending lectures and studying. The process of securing a parking spot within the university's compound is equally frustrating, as the demand far exceeds the available spaces, leading to long wait times for permits.

We are calling for an extension of the street parking limits from two hours to at least four to six hours. Alternatively, McMaster University should make provisions for additional parking spaces to accommodate students who rely on personal vehicles due to inadequate public transport options.

A survey conducted by the university's student body reveals that more than 60% of students using personal vehicles have received parking tickets because of the insufficient street parking limits. This causes unnecessary financial strain, especially on students who are already managing hefty education costs. Furthermore, nearly 75% of respondents expressed dissatisfaction with the current parking infrastructure, emphasizing the urgent need for change.

Increasing the parking duration on streets or expanding the available parking within the university itself would significantly alleviate the stresses faced by commuting students. Not only would this foster a more supportive academic environment, but it would also enable students to focus more on their studies rather than constantly worrying about receiving tickets.

We urge the city authorities and McMaster University to address this pressing issue promptly. By signing this petition, you can help us advocate for a practical and just solution that will benefit countless students and their families who are in similar situations. Together, we can create a positive change.
