Extend Maternity Leave in India to 1 Year — Because Mothers and Babies Deserve Better

The Issue

A mother is not just recovering after childbirth — she is healing physically, emotionally, and mentally while nurturing a completely dependent human being.

India currently provides 26 weeks of maternity leave for many working women. While this was a progressive step, it is still not enough for the well-being of both mother and child.

Medical experts across the world recommend exclusive breastfeeding for the first 6 months and continued close maternal care during the baby’s first year — the most critical stage of brain development, immunity building, emotional bonding, and physical growth.

Yet countless mothers are forced to:
- Return to work before fully recovering
- Stop breastfeeding earlier than planned
- Leave infants in daycare too soon
- Face postpartum anxiety, stress, and guilt
- Sacrifice their careers or resign completely

Motherhood should not become a penalty for working women.

We request the Government of India to:
- Extend paid maternity leave from 26 weeks to 1 full year
- Protect job security and career growth for mothers
- Encourage healthier child development and breastfeeding practices
- Support maternal mental health and postpartum recovery
- Build a more family-friendly and women-supportive workforce

A nation grows stronger when its mothers are supported.

This is not just a women’s issue — it is an investment in healthier children, stronger families, and a better future for India.

If you believe mothers deserve time to heal, bond, nurture, and raise healthier children without fear of losing their careers, please support and share this petition.

Because no mother should have to choose between her child and her livelihood.
