Extend Lunch Breaks to 45 Minutes in Denton ISD Schools

Extend Lunch Breaks to 45 Minutes in Denton ISD Schools
The Issue
As a student in the Denton Independent School District, I have experienced firsthand the negative effects of our current lunch break policy. With only 30 minutes allotted for lunch, and long lines often taking up half of that time, many students including myself are left with just about 15 minutes to eat. This has led to instances where I've had to skip meals or eat too quickly, leaving me hungry and unable to focus during my afternoon classes.
This is not just an isolated issue. It's a problem affecting many students across our district who are struggling academically due to inadequate nourishment and rushed eating habits. Eating too quickly can lead not only to poor digestion but also overeating as it takes about 20 minutes for your brain to register that you're full (Mayo Clinic).
Furthermore, according the American Academy of Pediatrics, adolescents should be given enough time for meals especially lunch which plays a critical role in maintaining energy levels for academic performance. The current situation is clearly detrimental not just physically but also mentally as it affects our ability to concentrate and perform well academically.
We call on the Denton ISD administration and school board members to extend the lunch break duration from 30 minutes to at least 45 minutes. This will allow us ample time not only eat at a healthy pace but also relax before resuming classes.
Please sign this petition if you believe that every student deserves adequate time for nourishment during their school day.
