Extend Library Hours in Sutherland Shire

Extend Library Hours in Sutherland Shire
The issue
Young students like me are increasingly finding it difficult to allocate sufficient time for study, particularly on weekends. The current operating hours of libraries in the Sutherland Shire, NSW, are having a tangible impact on our ability to prepare effectively for critical exams such as the Higher School Certificate (HSC) and university tests. Sutherland Library, the latest closing library in the shire, remains open until 9 pm during weekdays, but closes early at 4 pm on Saturdays and 5 pm on Sundays. This leaves a significant gap in accessible, distraction-free study environments for many students.
In contrast, libraries such as Forestville Library in Northern Beaches have introduced extended operating hours, some open 24/7, which has proven a game-changer for students who wish to study late or need to accommodate various schedules. Without similar accommodations in Sutherland Shire, we are at a disadvantage.
Extending the hours of operation for at least one library to remain open until 9 pm, even on weekends, or better yet, 24/7, would be extremely beneficial. This change would not only enhance our study opportunities but would also relieve stress and enhance productivity, ensuring students like me can perform to the best of our abilities.
The benefits of making this adjustment are supported by the experiences of countless students in other regions. Longer library hours have shown to improve educational outcomes by providing study spaces that are conducive to concentration and learning. Furthermore, this would alleviate the pressure on home environments where distractions often make focused study challenging.
I urge the representatives and relevant authorities in Sutherland Shire to consider this modest yet impactful change. By aligning our library operations with those seen in neighboring areas, we are investing in our community's education and future.
Please join us in advocating for extended library hours to support our local students. Sign this petition and help us create a conducive learning environment for every student in our shire.
