Extend deadline for international grads to apply for OPT

The Issue

Kunal Kanoi enrolled for Masters in Mechanical Engineering at Texas A&M University in the US to pursue a career in the Energy sector. His class is graduating in May 2020 after 2 years of intensive coursework. As per US regulations, they need to secure a job offer by July 2020 to apply for an Optional Practical Training (OPT) and maintain a valid visa.

However, the COVID-19 pandemic has severely impeded his recruitment process. Kunal has reached out to 40+ companies, only to be informed that hiring is halted until the situation around COVID-19 improves.

3000+ US companies have reportedly frozen hiring, gravely affecting the graduating class of 2020. This has left half a million international students stranded. They have to secure a job offer in a very limited time and challenging circumstances - failing which their visa will no longer be valid.

To support half a million talented international students like Kunal, Leap Finance is petitioning USCIS to extend the OPT application deadline to 180 days.
