The Issue

As someone deeply concerned about the safety of students online, I have observed how many young individuals use apps and websites daily without an awareness of the privacy risks involved. They often unknowingly share personal information, which could expose them to data tracking, online bullying, and inappropriate content. As a community, we have a duty to protect our children from these dangers.

In California, the Age-Appropriate Design Code Act was recently passed, mandating that apps and websites likely to be used by children automatically enable the safest settings. This important legislation ensures that children are not put at risk by default settings that prioritize engagement over safety, a common oversight that leaves young users vulnerable.

Unfortunately, Ohio does not currently have similar legal requirements. Apps and websites remain untouched by Ohio legislation, leaving our state's children unprotected. It is time for Ohio to take a definitive step in safeguarding the online experiences of its youth. By enacting the Age-Appropriate Design Code Act in Ohio, we can set an essential precedent that ensures platforms adhere to safety standards designed for children.

Statistics from reputable sources, including privacy groups and educational organizations, consistently highlight the vulnerabilities young users face online. According to a report from the Center for Cyber Safety and Education, "More than 60% of children share personal information with strangers on the internet." Such findings underscore the urgent need for legislative action.

Implementing this act in Ohio would not only protect minors but also promote a safer online environment for everyone by establishing a standard that all websites and apps must follow. With automatic safety settings, parents can have peace of mind knowing their children's online activities are appropriately safeguarded, allowing for a safer and more secure internet experience.

Sign this petition to urge Ohio lawmakers to adopt the Age-Appropriate Design Code Act and stand up for the safety and privacy of our children. Together, we can make a difference and ensure that minors are protected online.
