The Issue

As a proud second-generation diaspora, I have had the privilege of celebrating my rich Barbadian heritage through numerous visits and cultural immersions. In 2023, my joy knew no bounds when my application for citizenship was successful. However, this joy was tinged with disappointment as I realized that my daughter would not have the same opportunity to embrace her heritage in such a profound way.

Barbados is known for its vibrant culture and strong sense of community. It is home to approximately 287,000 people (World Bank data), many of whom are descendants from all corners of the globe. The current law allows only first and second generation diaspora to apply for citizenship by descent. This means that third generation diaspora like my daughter are excluded from this opportunity.

We believe it's time for change. We urge the Prime Minister of Barbados to consider extending citizenship by descent applications to third generation diaspora/grandchildren of Barbados-born citizens.

This extension will not only strengthen ties between Barbados and its global family but also enrich our shared cultural heritage. Moreover, it will allow future generations like my daughter to maintain a tangible connection with their ancestral roots.

Let us ensure that our children can celebrate their rich heritage just as we have been able to do so far. Please sign this petition urging the Prime Minister of Barbados to extend citizenship by descent applications beyond two generations.
