Every day, students at Asheville Middle School face a time crunch. The current three-minute interval between bells leaves us rushing from class to class with little regard for personal needs or basic logistics, such as retrieving books from lockers, moving across different sections of the school, or simply using the bathroom. As a student, I find myself constantly stressed by the lack of time and this is a concern not only affecting me but also my peers.

Let me walk you through a typical day: after finishing my band practice, I need to walk to my next class, which is on the eighth-grade hall. This often means maneuvering through crowded corridors, struggling with jammed locker doors, and frequently foregoing bathroom breaks. It's virtually impossible to get from point A to point B while meeting even the most basic needs within this three-minute span.

The current schedule compromises our ability to maintain focus and engage fully in our classes. Studies have shown that students perform better academically when they have sufficient time to transition between classes, fostering a less stressful environment and allowing the brain to reset. According to a report by the National Education Association, inadequate transition times can lead to diminished engagement and increased anxiety, both of which are detrimental to the learning experience.

By extending the bell schedule to five minutes, Asheville Middle School would not only address these logistical challenges but also improve overall student well-being.
