The Issue

As an AP Statistics student, juggling multiple responsibilities often feels overwhelming, particularly for those of us who struggle with chronic procrastination and memory issues. AP students like myself, who represent an estimated 85% of the AP Statistics cohort, did not get the opportunity to complete the Thanksgiving break packet or collaborate with peers in person. The constraints of a rapidly approaching deadline and the lack of face-to-face interaction have only amplified our stress, hindering our ability to absorb and apply crucial statistical concepts effectively.

During Thanksgiving break, many students find themselves away from their regular study environments and separated from their peers. This period is traditionally a time for family and rest, not just focused academic endeavor. Collaboration, a key component of effective learning, was notably inhibited as face-to-face meetings were impossible for many. As we return to our studies with overwhelming assignments, bridging the gap in our understanding and maintaining mental health becomes significantly challenging.

Research has shown that effective collaboration and reasonable deadlines are crucial for enhancing student engagement and knowledge retention. By extending the deadline, schools can promote a more balanced academic life, allowing students not only to catch up but to digest the information more thoroughly and perform well without compromising their well-being.

Thus, we propose that the school board extend the due date for the AP Statistics Thanksgiving Break packet from the current deadline to at least two weeks post-break. This extension would provide ample time for students to engage with the material in a more meaningful way, seek necessary help, and collaborate effectively with peers.

We urge you to consider the pressures on AP students today and the benefits of flexible deadlines in promoting educational success and mental health. Please sign this petition to help extend the due date for the AP Statistics 2025 Thanksgiving Break packet, contributing to a more supportive academic environment for all students involved.
