Express no confidence in Mayor Asta Hill of Alice Springs
The issue
Alice Springs, a vibrant community we call home, has long prided itself on its traditions and way of life. Our current mayor, Asta Hill, has unfortunately not upheld the dignity and expectations of her office. I, along with many others in our community, feel deeply disappointed by her actions, which I believe do not reflect the values and interests of the people of Alice Springs.
Firstly, Mayor Hill has consistently failed to wear the mayoral robe at council meetings. This attire is not just a piece of clothing but a symbol of respect and tradition, representing the trust and esteem the community places in its elected officials. Her disregard for this custom disrespects not only the office of the mayor but also all of us who cherish our community's heritage.
2. Mayor Hill has altered the manner in which rates are calculated, doing so without the prior consent of the residents of Alice Springs. This unilateral decision raises concerns about transparency and accountability in her administration. Such actions undermine trust between the local government and the people it serves and call into question the equitable treatment of all citizens in this community.
3. Misleading the ratepayers association, the mayor's support for the Greens' political agendas despite public opposition, particularly concerning the Australia Day ceremony, has upset many ratepayers who feel misled by her commitment to their interests. This divergence not only reflects a disconnect between Mayor Hill and her constituents but also suggests a lack of consideration for diverse community perspectives.
4. Constantly not referring to Alice Springs by its worldwide-known name since 1933. The town was named after the wife of Charles Todd, who oversaw construction of the overland telegraph line to Alice Springs.
These issues are why we are calling on the community to express a vote of no confidence in Mayor Asta Hill.
