Expose abuse of power at Oshkosh Correctional Institution

Expose abuse of power at Oshkosh Correctional Institution
The Issue
My fiancé, Jeff Jensen, is currently incarcerated at Oshkosh Correctional Institution in Wisconsin, and he is suffering from severe violations of his religious and constitutional rights. Jeffrey was placed in segregation for asking for a copy of an encouraging mental health quote, which he has done in the past and never had an issue with that. While in Segregation Lt. Baatz told Jeff that Jeff has no rights, and took Jeff's head covering "yarmulke" from him, knowing that Jeff is Jewish. Jeff obtained his yarmulke later from another officer. Jeff's situation is not unique; many other inmates face similar mistreatment and neglect from certain authorities who abuse their power. This must stop.
Jeff has been denied the ability to freely practice his religion, a fundamental right protected by the First Amendment of the United States Constitution. Despite repeated requests, the institution has failed to accommodate his religious needs and practices, causing significant emotional distress and impacting his mental health. Moreover, he has encountered neglect that threatens his well-being, such as inadequate access to medical treatment and basic necessities, creating an inhumane living environment. It should be noted while in Segregation Jeff had a medical emergency regarding his physical health, and it took almost two hours for medical personnell to respond.
Statistics from the Bureau of Justice Statistics emphasize that respecting inmates’ rights is not only a legal obligation but also vital for rehabilitation. Studies have shown that when inmates' rights are respected, recidivism rates decline, making it clear that respect and humane treatment serve the interests of both justice and public safety. Furthermore, Oshkosh Correctional Institution has a documented history of complaints about mistreatment, indicating a systemic issue that demands immediate attention.
The abuse of power by certain authorities within Oshkosh Correctional Institution compromises the integrity of our justice system. We must hold these authorities accountable to ensure that Jeff's and other inmates' rights are respected. This call is not only for Jeff but for every individual who finds themselves in a similar situation, where their basic human rights are trampled upon by those who should protect them.
Our goal is to demand a thorough investigation into Oshkosh Correctional Institution’s practices and to push for reforms that guarantee the safeguarding of inmates' rights. We urge the Wisconsin State Department of Corrections to take action by implementing oversight mechanisms and providing regular training for the staff to prevent future abuses.
Please join us in standing up for Jeff and all those who cannot raise their voices. Together, we can make a change and ensure that justice and fairness prevail in our correctional system. Sign this petition to support humane treatment and rights for all inmates at Oshkosh Correctional Institution.
