The Issue

Brennon Dulle, a resilient resident of Saskatoon, has faced immense health challenges throughout his life. He survived an arteriovenous malformation (AVM) stroke, endured approximately 500-600 seizures, and underwent four brain surgeries. Unfortunately, two of these crucial surgeries had to be performed in Calgary due to the lack of specialized treatment options available in Saskatchewan.

Similarly, Jaden Dulle, Brennon's cousin, has lived with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and treatment-resistant depression—forms of mental health conditions that traditional therapies often fail to combat effectively. For Jaden, ketamine therapy has been life-saving, offering a beacon of hope where other treatments fell short.

Currently, access to ketamine therapy—a transformative treatment for many living with severe, treatment-resistant mental health conditions—is limited. Due to geographical and policy limitations, patients like Jaden and Brennon have had to seek out-of-province solutions or settle for less effective treatments.

Ketamine therapy, which has proven to rapidly alleviate symptoms of depression and PTSD in some patients, should be more accessible. According to a study published in the American Journal of Psychiatry, ketamine treatments can have significant positive effects on patients who do not respond to traditional antidepressants. With statistics showing that more than 30% of Canadians with depression are classified as treatment-resistant, the need for alternative treatments has never been more urgent.

If Saskatchewan prioritizes extending access to ketamine therapy, it can lead to more residents receiving the care they need within their province. This not only reduces the financial and emotional burdens of traveling for treatment but also ensures timely and effective interventions that can improve quality of life.

We call on the Government of Saskatchewan to actively explore greater access to ketamine therapy across the province. By doing so, the government can pave the way for advancements in mental health care, provide relief to families, and uphold the health and dignity of its citizens.
