Expedite the Migration Process for Aging Parents of First-Generation Australian Migrants
The issue
As a first-generation migrant in Australia, I have seen firsthand the challenges faced by our aging parents who wish to join us. My father, now 84 years old, has been waiting since 2019 for his migration approval. Despite our family's willingness to pay a $50K guarantee. We needed to reapply again 2021 due to COVID 19 and DIMIA requirements. there is still no clear timeline for when his application will be processed.
Many migrants like myself moved to Australia and started contributing through taxes from day one. We did not burden the country with welfare or education costs - those were borne by our parents back home. Now, when it's time for them to join us here in their twilight years, they are being held up due to bureaucratic delays.
This situation makes us feel like second-class citizens in a country we've come to call home. It goes against the Australian ethos of fairness and respect for all citizens regardless of their origin.
We understand that immigration processes involve cost considerations but let's not forget that these are people who raised children who now contribute significantly towards Australia’s economy and society.
Therefore, we urge the Australian government to expedite the migration process for aging parents of first-generation migrants. This is not just about policy; it's about human dignity and respecting those who have indirectly contributed towards building this great nation through their children.
Please sign this petition if you believe in an inclusive Australia where every citizen is valued equally irrespective of their migration status or age.
