The Issue

Loneliness and social isolation among older adults are growing public health concerns that affect millions of Americans. Many older adults experience less social contact after retirement, the loss of a family member or longtime friend, mobility challenges, chronic illness, or living alone. These situations can gradually lead to loneliness and social disconnection, affecting both physical health and emotional well-being. Older adults may be especially vulnerable because they may face barriers related to transportation, technology, or access to community activities, events, and programs.

This issue extends beyond the individual and affects the broader community. Research has shown that social isolation is tied to a higher risk of depression, anxiety, cognitive decline, heart disease, and premature mortality (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention [CDC], 2024; National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine [NASEM], 2020). As the older adult population continues to grow, communities need to provide not just activities for older adults, but meaningful opportunities for connection and accessible programs that support healthy aging. When older adults have social connections, they tend to stay more active, keep their independence, and feel more involved within their communities.

The purpose of this petition is to encourage community leaders and organizations to support and engage in programs that will reduce loneliness and social isolation among older adults. This includes better access to transportation, as well as more opportunities for growth in social engagement and community resources for older adults. By taking action, communities can enhance the health and well-being of older adults and build a stronger and more welcoming community for everyone.

If communities develop strong social interaction programs for older adults now, loneliness and isolation can be reduced before they become treated as a normal part of aging. Older adults should not be forgotten or left without support, because they deserve dignity, inclusion, and care. Stronger support, communication, and opportunities for connection can promote healthier aging and give older adults the socialization they deserve. Growing older, only to be left alone and forgotten, would be an injustice to any community member.
