Expand IS77 Joseph F. Quinn Intermediate School from Grades 6-8 to 6-12

Expand IS77 Joseph F. Quinn Intermediate School from Grades 6-8 to 6-12
The Issue
Hello Ridgewood Community!
Joseph F. Quinn Intermediate School 77 Families would like to invite you to sign this petition to expand our school!
Currently, IS77 is a Middle School in Ridgewood, NY serving Grade 6-8 students in the Ridgewood Community. IS77’s families would like to expand our school to reach High School and serve students Grades 6-12.
The main school building was built in 1911, and a new annex opened in 2002. IS77 has been a community school serving Middle School students since then!
We are starting this petition because on September 25th, the families were invited to a community virtual meeting (with less than 1 week’s notice) and were told there is a proposal for another different, Grades 6-12 Queens International School that wants to co-locate with us since currently, our school has the space. We informed them of our interest to expand our school instead, to fill the seats. We informed them that there are numerous families that had asked if our school can expand to reach up to 12th grade. We believe it can. IS77 is also in the works of adding G&T 6th grade, a Studio Art Program and another dual language to it school (possibly Chinese or French) to bring more learning opportunities to the students and families in our community.
We believe by expanding IS77 to 12th grade, we can serve more families, without requiring our students to travel far to go to a high school outside our neighborhood. Currently, there is no 6-12 school in Ridgewood, NY. Grover Cleveland is currently the only High School Option for families that want to stay in their neighborhood.
The new school they want to put into our school, the Queens International was designed in response to the 30,000+ newly-arrived students who have enrolled for the first time in a NYCPS public school since July 2022.
Even though we believe it may be a good initiative for Queens International School to help those students, we, the Ridgewood Community, IS77 Parents/Families believe it would be in the best interest for us to actually expand our school, rather than having a completely new school co-locating with us.
The next community meeting will be next week, Tuesday November 12 6:00pm to 7:30pm in the school auditorium. Feel free to join the meeting to share your thoughts!
We want to present this petition to NYCDOE to let them know our community would like to expand our already amazing school to 12th grade, rather than have it co-locate with hundreds of other students from all over New York.
Please sign this urgent petition to show support for IS77 to expand from Grades 6-8 to grades 6-12. We want the best for our Ridgewood Communities and families. Our motto is “A Community of Learners,” and we would like to further grow our community of learners in Ridgewood , NY.
Thank you!
