Expand food access for vulnerable populations in Buffalo

Expand food access for vulnerable populations in Buffalo

The Issue

Living in Buffalo poses a significant challenge for many residents due to the high cost of living. An average Buffalo resident needs to earn between $13.00 and $17.00 per hour to manage their daily expenses comfortably. Yet, the qualification for Medicaid support is set at $11.00 per hour or less, creating a frustrating gap for those who earn below the cost of living but above the Medicaid threshold. This gap leaves many residents, especially seniors, veterans, and disabled individuals without essential healthcare and support services they desperately need.

Our community is home to countless seniors ageing 60 and above, veterans, and disabled individuals who face daily struggles due to limited transportation options and insufficient healthcare support. As living expenses continue to rise, these vulnerable groups are left juggling expenses and basic needs.

To address this pressing issue, we propose the establishment of a Mobile Pantry/Pop-up Distribution with integrated resource access. This initiative is designed to facilitate food distribution via a delivery program specifically tailored for homebound individuals. Additionally, we aim to schedule off-site food distribution twice monthly at community locations. The strategy is rooted in structured community-based outreach that ensures a streamlined approach to serving those in need.

The proposed program not only secures essential food supplies but also lays out a resource access strategy that aids those outside the economic threshold of Medicaid. By implementing this structured program, we aim to alleviate the pressure faced by those living on the periphery of the statutory economic support.

This community-led initiative will provide a reliable safety net for residents grappling with the cost of living in Buffalo, while ensuring consistent access to both nutrition and essential services.

We call upon local authorities, community leaders, and residents of Buffalo to back this proposal for a Mobile Pantry/Pop-up Distribution Service. Sign this petition to support a sustainable solution and to show solidarity with our community members who need it most.
